EduCon2.1 is hosted by the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, PA. SLA is an inner city public high school established in 2007 and built from the "ground up" adding one class year at a time. In the 2009-10 school year, SLA will have its first graduating class and its first "full" year of 9-12. Chris Lehmann, the principal is considered one of the top educators to watch in this country.
Conference Axioms
Guiding Principles of EduCon 2.1
1) Our schools must be inquiry-driven, thoughtful and empowering for all members
2) Our schools must be about co-creating -- together with our students -- the 21st Century Citizen
3) Technology must serve pedagogy, not the other way around.
4) Technology must enable students to research, create, communicate and collaborate
5) Learning can -- and must -- be networked.
Subjects/Disciplines/Level
The sessions at EduCon are highly applicable for MS and US teaching faculty as well as educational technologists and administrators. Conversations evolve around shifting learning environments and new teaching strategies and technology platforms. Heavy emphasis on pedagogy. Observation of SLA classrooms on Friday is beneficial.
Session Highlights
Session Title: Copyright Confusion
(Attended by: Laura Deisley) Session Description http://educon21.wikispaces.com/Conversations#e204-1
This session focused on newly researched and documented copyright and fairuse guidelines funded by a MacArthur Foundation grant. Renee Hobbs of Temple University's Media Lab and Kristen Hokansen, a Philadelphia educator, presented the guidelines which focus heavily on the rights of users.
Lovett Application
The shifting nature of classrooms and the publishing/distribution of student and teacher work online calls for re-education of Lovett faculty on Copyright and Fair Use and a K-12 scope and scaffold for student understanding. Laura Deisley will guide the conversations with ed tech staff and library staff with a plan for fall 2009 implementation of Lovett guidelines.
Session Title: Assessment and Evaluation in the 21st Century Classroom
(Attended by: Owen Mathews; Laura Deisley has heard Glogowski on several occasions) Session Description http://educon21.wikispaces.com/Conversations#e204-5 Konrad Glogowski, PhD outlines his own experiences and process towards a conversational approach to assessment and evaluation.
